ABOUT TYPE 1 DIABETES
Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults at any age, and there are over 300,000 Canadians who live with it. Its onset is sudden, causes a lifelong dependence on medical intervention, and carries the constant threat of serious complications. While its cause is not entirely understood, it is not based on diet or lifestyle, but believed to be related to both genetic factors and environmental triggers. There is nothing you can do to prevent it, and nothing you can do to get rid of it…yet.
For over 40 years, JDRF (previously Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) as been a global leader the search for an end to T1D, through both research funding and advocacy. JDRF’s research mission is to discover, develop, and deliver advances that cure, better treat, and prevent T1D. It also recognizes that part of its mission must be to help those with T1D live healthier, easier, and safer lives until it reaches its ultimate goal: a world without T1D.
